The inner workings of software and computers are often misunderstood, hidden behind terms like ‘the internet’ and ‘the cloud’.

As a graphic designer, Clara Manigne-Malan depends on such technology when she manipulates images.
What even is an image?

Clara deconstructed the digital ecosystem influencing graphic design and data collection to understand their place within a larger structure, seeking emancipation from opaque software and hidden datacentres. She developed a system in which she controls her image production and understands its processes. Inside her own home, a server hosts ‘On Learning Graphic Design Again’.

This website offers coded tools, allowing users to rethink and practice graphic design by directly manipulating metadata.
